What should you wear for your next interview?
Don’t let how you dress for an interview ruin your chances of getting that new job you have
been searching for. When meeting a prospective new employer, you have probably already
made a first impression based on how you are dressed even before saying “Hello”. Dressing the
part is just as important as writing your resume. You must dress to make the best impression
you can.
Here are some tips that can help you land your next job.
Dress in a manner that is professionally appropriate to the position for which you are applying.
Dressing professionally shows respect for yourself, the interviewer and the company. For men,
this means wearing a full suit, and for women, this means wearing a skirt or pants with a jacket.
Men should wear a matching jacket and pants, dress shirt, tie, coordinating socks and dress
shoes. A dark-colored suit with a light-colored shirt is best. Avoid loud colors and flashy ties.
Hair should be neat, clean and conservative. Be sure to shave the morning of the interview,
even if you don’t normally do this every day. If you have a beard or mustache, this should be
trimmed and neat-looking.
Women should wear a matching jacket and pants or skirt, conservative blouse, neutral hose
and closed-toe dress shoes. Anything tight, bright, short or low cut should be avoided. If
wearing a skirt, it should be knee-length. Make-up, nail polish and hair should also be neat,
clean and conservative.
Clothing should be neat, clean and well pressed. Shoes should be in good condition and well-
polished, not scuffed or run-down at the heels. Both men and women should keep jewelry to a
minimum and avoid anything too flashy.
Try to avoid wearing cologne or perfume. Strong scents can be overpowering at times or cause
allergic reactions. Make sure you have fresh breath and do not smoke before an interview.
When dressing for an interview, wear things that make you feel good. If you feel good about
yourself, you’ll be more comfortable and able to think more clearly and communicate more
effectively.
Remember to dress for success and be yourself.
